پیش از زلزله:
دستورات مذکور درباره لوله‌کشی را مدّنظر قرار دهید، و دقّت کنید که آب‌گرمکن‌ها ایمن هستند و احیانا در مواقع زمین‌لرزه دچار جابجایی یا سقوط نمی‌شوند. آب‌گرمکن باید با دقت به توسط پیچ و مهره فلزی در دو نقطه به دیوار بسته شود (از یک سوم بالایی و پایینی مخزن). زلزله می‌تواند سبب تکان خوردن آب‌گرمکن‌های ناایمن گردد و احتمالا تبدیل‌ها و رابط‌ها را بشکند که نهایتا به آتش بیانجامد. از دست رفتن یک آب‌گرمکن سبب محرومیت یک خانه از مخزن ارزشمند آب شود که خود برای پخت و پز و نیز نوشیدن مورد احتیاج است.
*رابط‌ها و تبدیل‌های نیمه خشک (آلومینیوم یا مس) را با رابط‌ها و تبدیل‌های شیاردار تعویض کنید. احتمال شکستگی چنین رابط‌هایی در حین زلزله کمتر است.
*یک آچار 12 اینچی یا بزرگتر دم‌دستی برای قطع کردنِ دستیِ جریانِ گاز در هنگام ضرورت در دسترس داشته باشید.
*اطلاع کافی داشته باشید که صفحه جریان برق در کجای منزل قرار دارد و اینکه چگونه در مواقع اضطراری می‌توان آن را قطع کرد.
پس از زلزله:
*جریان گاز را پس از زلزله قطع نکنید مگر آنکه بو یا صدای نشتی گاز را احساس می‌کنید.
*چنانجه یکی از آلات و ادوات دچار نشتی است، قطع کردن شیر گاز میان آن قسمت دچار نشتی و لولهٔ گاز می‌تواند جلوی نشتی را بگیرد. اگر این کار جلوی نشتی را نگرفت، باید گاز را از کنتور قطع کرد.
*اگر بو یا صدای نشتی گار می‌آید، هرگز کبریت، شمع، یا سیگار روشن نکنید، و نیز ابزارهای برقی را (حتی کلید پریز را هم) روشن با خاموش نکنید. گاز را باید به صورت دستی در محل کنتور قطع کرد. با استفاده از آچار فرانسه، شیر را به اندازهٔ یک چهارم بچرخانید و آن را از حالت عمودی به حالت افقی برسانید. این عمل جلوی جریان گاز را خواهد گرفت.
*چنانچه گاز از کنتور قطع شده باشد، سعی نکنید آن را بدون کمک خدمات تاسیسات به حالت پیشین خود بازگردانید. خدمات گاز نمی‌باید دوباره به جریان افتد مگر آنکه خدمات تاسیسات مشخص کند که امکانات، ابزار‌ها و ادوات، یا هر نوع ابزار و وسیله دیگر امن و ایمن گشته است.
*اگر جریان الکتریسیته‌ای هست که از کار افتاده باشد، ابزار مربوطه را لمس نکنید. ممکن است که خط جریان همچنان دارای انرژی و خطرناک باشد.
*اگر در هنگام قطعی برق از ژنراتور استفاده می‌کنید، آن را به سیستم برق منزل وصل نکنید. چنانچه به این کار مبادرت ورزید می‌تواند به مرگ یا آسیب جدی شود و همچنین هر کارمند خدمات تاسیسات در نزدیکی خطوط برق را مورد تهدید قرار دهد. همچنین وصل کردن ژنراتور می‌تواند به ادوات و وسایل صدمه بزند.

SAN DIEGO GAS & ELECTRIC reminds customers that advance preparation is critical and offers these safety tips to help reduce the possibility of injuries or damage to property that may occur during the next quake.
Before an earthquake:
*Follow the rules contained in current plumbing codes, requiring that water heaters be secured to the wall studs to prevent them from moving or toppling over. The water heater should be fastened securely to the wall studs in two places -- the upper and lower one-third of the tank -- with heavy bolts and metal straps. A quake may cause an unsecured water heater to move, possibly breaking the gas connectors, which may result in a fire. The loss of a water heater also would deprive a home of a valuable water source that may be needed for cooking and drinking.
*Replace semi-rigid (aluminum or copper) gas appliance connectors with approved connectors made of corrugated metal. These are less likely to crack during an earthquake.
*Have a 12-inch or larger adjustable wrench handy to manually turn off the gas meter should it be necessary.
*Know where all the electrical panels are located in and around the home and how to turn the electricity off in case of emergency.
After an earthquake:
Do not turn off the gas meter after an earthquake, unless there is the smell or sound of gas escaping.
*If an appliance appears to have a leak, turning off the valve between the appliance and gas line may stop the leak. If this does not stop the leak, the gas should be shut off at the meter.
*If there is the smell or sound of gas escaping, do not light a match, candle or cigarette, and do not turn electrical devices -- not even a light switch -- on or off. (If calling the utility for assistance, call from a safe location, away from the leak.) The gas should be manually turned off at the meter. Using an adjustable wrench, make a quarter-turn of the valve, moving it from a vertical position to a horizontal position. This will shut off the flow of gas. *If the gas is shut off at the meter, do not attempt to turn it back on without the help of the utility. Gas service should not be restored until the utility determines that the customer's facilities, appliances or other gas equipment have been made safe.
*Should there be a downed electrical line, do not touch the equipment. The line may still be energized and dangerous.
*If running an emergency electric generator during an outage, do not connect it to the home's electrical system. Doing so could result in death or serious injury and also threaten any utility employees on nearby power lines. Plugging the generator back into the electric system also can damage appliances.
